Derby Cathedral Quarter Gears Up For Derby Festé 2017
By Martin Langsdale, chair of the Cathedral Quarter which drives forward activities under the area’s Business Improvement District (BID) status and is a sponsor of this year’s event.
“Businesses in the Cathedral Quarter and visitors alike are widely anticipating the return of Derby Festé to our streets again this September which is a key highlight in this award-winning part of the city centre.
Derby has a growing reputation as a festival city and we support a number of festivals and events – as well as organising our own entertainment – as part of our objective to improve the visitor experience in the area.
More specifically, to whet the public appetite for Festé, we have been working with Déda Producing – one of the fantastic creative partners based in the Cathedral Quarter and a leading light in Festé – to stage our monthly CQ Saturdays Street Circus performances throughout the summer.
Our support of festivals and our own CQ Saturdays programme was one of the many BID activities which impressed the judges of the Great British High Street resulting in us winning the best city location in the prestigious national awards at the tail end of last year. This has raised the profile of the Cathedral Quarter considerably and I hope that this accolade will encourage even more people to come to Derby Festé for a fantastic weekend of family-friendly entertainment and activities.
Derby Festé has developed into an internationally renowned event, attracting an impressive array of performers from across the globe and simultaneously transforming the Cathedral Quarter streets into one big festival party.
This area is now synonymous with Derby Festé. Many of the partners involved are organisations based here in the cultural heart of the city and the majority of the street entertainment and headline performances over the weekend are in this area.
Businesses in the Cathedral Quarter are fully behind the annual festival recognising that Festé brings a unique, inclusive and vibrant atmosphere to the area – building on the work that the BID undertakes throughout the year to animate the streets.
Footfall soars during Festé weekend with visitors taking the opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere in the area, visit our fantastic array of high quality independent and national retailers and relax with family and friends at our award winning cafes, restaurants, bars and pubs both during the day and in the evening.
The Cathedral Quarter Rangers will be a visible presence in the area and will be on-hand to help visitors to the area, some of whom may not usually venture into the city centre or who are first-time visitors to the city. I feel sure that, once these visitors experience Feste and all that the Cathedral Quarter has to offer, they are then far more likely to return on repeat visits.
All in all – Derby Festé is a fantastic celebration of all that is great about our city. It is a creative highlight in the events calendar and brings people together to enjoy superb high quality outdoor entertainment in an area that is recognised as the top city location in the UK. Who could ask for more?”
